We have every stitch of canvas aloft spread, and though it blows SE at 12 knots, the Goliath is seemingly making way to the NW. Massive swells bash against the starboard hull. The small island we spied two days hence at dusk is now ever closer to the starboard.11:04 AM – All attempts made from crew to steer useless…Rudder is worthless. Despite our best efforts and contrary to all wind direction, we move toward the island.1:18 PM – Lowered anchor…Much damage to ship done under force.

Chaos reigns. Chain and anchor are gone.7:00 PM – Dusk falls. The ship is now stationary, yet the wind blows. All canvas aloft, to no avail. It is bewildering as to how we are stationary. No sound of scrapping heard on hull. We are not stuck on a reef. The island is within rowing distance. Will send crew out to island at daybreak.10:12 PM – Awoken by 2nd lieutenant Hobart as I had drifted asleep whilst looking over charts…Crew is near mutiny…With much haste I left my cabin to restore order, only to observe disturbing phenomenon’s.

The deep ocean below us glows eerily. Something large swims far beneath, sometimes blocking the mysterious light from below and casting its haunting shadow up from the depths…10:33 PM – Something large is stationed out to starboard in the water, out of sight…All hails unanswered…Canon hit something metallic…Goliath immobile, and under attack…Crew ordered to abandon ship for safety of island…God be with us…Captain Barnabas Hardwick
